Department of Zoology congratulate Ms. Roopal Bohra for qualifying SET examination 2023

In order to celebrate National Science day, a guest lecture was organized for PG students and research scholars by Discipline of Zoology on 28th February.  Lecture was delivered by S.J.S. Flora, Ph.D. FNASc, Former Director, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Lucknow and Mohali on “SAFETY AND TOXICITY STUDIES OF HERBAL DRUGS”.

He discussed his area of expertise in the field of toxicological research. He introduced students with different areas of toxicology, types of toxicity testing and side Effects associated with Use of Herbal Drugs. He also talked about various in-vitro and in-vivo safety tests for evaluation of toxicity of herbal drugs. He highlighted the role of Herbal drugs as ameliorative agents against Heavy Metals Toxicity and as protective agents against Blistering Agents. At last, he discussed about Safety Measurements for the usage of herbal drugs.  He concluded the lecture with the quote “All substances are poisonous; There is none that is not a poison. The right dose differentiates A poison and a remedy”

 

An educational visit to SMS medical College was organized by discipline of Zoology, IIS deemed to be University on 22 February, 2023 for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students were escorted by Dr Geeta Pandey and Dr Keerti Sharma.

Exhibition has showcased various life processes, 3D working models, CPR demonstration, causes treatments and prevention ofmany life stylerelated disease including tuberculosis, arthritis, diabetes, cancer etc. Students were also enlightened by a short documentary film about the importance and need of organ donation and were motivated to take the organ donation pledge. It was really a great experience with lots of knowledge and motivation for the students.

 

World Heart day was celebrated by Discipline of Zoology on September 29, 2022 in Ojas Hall. Theme of the occasion was "Use heart for every heart" as stated by World Heart Federation. As a part of spreading awareness on cardiovascular disease, a quiz competition on “Heart physiology and diseases” was organized for B. Sc and M. Sc students. Students of M.Sc. 3rd Semester also performed a skit related to heart issues and tips to keep heart healthy. As a part of the celebration, Prof. Pradeep Bhatnagar, Dean, Faculty of Science addressed the gathering about the importance of world heart day celebration and the importance of sports and exercise in our life.  Dr. Priyankar Mathur, Head of the discipline also explained briefly about the cardiovascular diseases and emphasized on the importance of good eating habits. Finally, a promise was made by all the participants to eat healthy food, do exercises daily and to be stay happy. 

The Discipline of Zoology, IIS (deemed to be University) Jaipur organized a Guest Lecture on Structural variations in skeletal framework of Vertebrates for all UG (Honours) Semester III and PG final year students. Lecture was delivered by Dr. Ghanshyam Kachhawa on September 21, 2022. He enriched the students with the knowledge of basic of Osteology viz. bone structure, importance and functions of bones and skeletal system in living organisms. He explained all parts of the vertebrate skeletal system by drawing them on board. He touched upon the components of the syllabus and highlighted the key points related to comparison and identification of various bones amongst different vertebrate groups.

 

An interactive session was organized by Discipline Zoology on 13 April 2022 to aware the research scholars about the current scenario of research. Dr Hardik J. Pandya,  Assistant Professor, Department of Electronic Systems Engineering, Division of EECS, IISc Bangalore and Dr Neetu Bhaskar (Alumnae of the Department), formerly research associate at IISC Bangalore and currently working as postdoctoral research fellow at Temple University School of Pharmacy, Philadelphia. They interacted with the PhD research scholars, answered their queries regarding research and gave an idea of latest research trends. They also make them aware about how they can develop research skills and collaborate with other universities based on their expertise area.

 

An in-house workshop was organized by the Department of Zoology on 26th April, 2022. In this workshop, research scholars Tejinder Kaur, Kusum Rani and Hansa Gupta imparted their knowledge of different techniques as per their expertise to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. Hansa Gupta gave an introduction of the estrous cycle, its phases and explained to the students how they can take vaginal smear and identify the different phases of estrous cycle. Tejinder Kaur gave a detailed explanation of chick embryo development and methods to study teratologic effects in chick embryos by different methods. Kusum Rani explained the significance of various sperm parameters in evaluating male fertility. She made students aware about the techniques which can be used for evaluating sperm count, motility, viability etc. The workshop was found to be fruitful for the students as they became well versed with all the techniques.

 

The orientation session inDiscipline of Zoology was held on 1stSeptember 2022 at 1.45 p.m. in Room No. A 604.The session started with the brief introduction about the department; all the faculty members were present during the session. The first semester students of B.Sc. (Pass course), B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. were acquainted with the curriculum, faculty profile, time table and other details through a power point presentation.

The information regarding Library facilities and e-resources available in the library were also covered in the orientation session. They were also told about the Do’s and Dont’s to be followed by the students in the library as well as in campus. Students were made aware about the Laboratory Rules and Good Laboratory Practices to be followed during the practical classes.

Besides this, students were also given information regarding Credit Templates, Examination Scheme and pattern of CA and SEE question papers.

Students also got to know the placements of alumnae of the department through the presentation. This was followed by an interactive session with senior students; they cheered up the freshers with a small activity and a quiz based on orientation programme. Research Scholars of the discipline of the Zoology shared their research experiences and future prospects of their thrust area of research. They also gave the tips on preparation for various competitive exams including NET-JRF, SET, GATE etc.

In the end feedback link was shared with the students to get their views regarding this session.

A visit to Saras dairy, Jaipur was organized by Discipline of Zoology on 12th September 2022 for the students of B. Sc Semester V (Pass Course and Honors). Total 43 students were escorted by two faculty members Dr Lata Shahani and Dr Geeta Pandey. The trip was planned for the students to make them aware about the various microbiological technologies used in the field of dairy industry.

Students learnt about the basic techniques and methods involved in processing and manufacturing of milk products. Different processing units of dairy including collection unit, sterilization unit, quality analysis unit, microbiological unit, storage unit and packaging unit were visited by students. Students also learnt about the processing of different dairy products such as milk, Ghee, Srikhand, Paneer, Chaach etc. Over all it was a informative industrial visit for the students.
