The orientation session in Discipline of Zoology was held on 30th August 2024 at 11.00 p.m. in Ojas Hall. The program commenced with a warm welcome for the freshers. Dr. Lata Shahani, Head of the Department of Zoology, extended a heartfelt greeting to the new students as they began their academic journey. Prof. P.J. John, Dean of the Faculty of Science, also joined in the welcome, offering his best wishes and words of encouragement. He motivated the students to strive for excellence in their studies and make the most of the opportunities available to them, emphasizing the importance of dedication and hard work in achieving their goals.

The first semester students of B.Sc. (Pass course), B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. were acquainted with the curriculum, faculty profile, time table and other details through a power point presentation. The information regarding Library facilities and e-resources available in the library were also covered in the orientation session. Students were made aware about the Laboratory Rules and Good Laboratory Practices to be followed during the practical classes. Besides this, students were also given information regarding Credit Templates, Examination Scheme and pattern of CA and SEE question papers. Students also got to know the placements of alumnae of the department through the presentation.

Senior students uplifted the spirits of the fresher’s through a series of engaging activities, including dance performances, mimicry, and interactive games. Additionally, research scholars from the Zoology department organized a quiz focused on core subject knowledge, adding an academic twist to the festivities. In the end feedback link was shared with the students to get their views regarding this session.

On 1st April 2024, a group of 14 postgraduate students of the Department of Environmental Science and Zoology, along with one faculty member (Dr. Ashish Tambi, Sr. Assistant Professor, Dept. of Environmental Science), participated in a visit to the common biomedical waste treatment plant managed by Instomedix Pvt. Ltd. in Jaipur. The visit commenced with a briefing session by the plant operator Mr. K.S. Sethi along with his assistant Mr. Guddu Yadav, who provided an overview of the facility's operations and highlighted the significance of proper biomedical waste management in mitigating health and environmental risks.

During the visit, students were guided through various sections of the treatment plant, including waste reception, segregation, disinfection, and disposal. They observed firsthand the segregation of different categories of biomedical waste, such as infectious, sharp, human and animal anatomical waste, to ensure safe handling and treatment. The tour also included demonstrations of the treatment processes, including autoclaving, chemical disinfection, and incineration, aimed at sterilizing and rendering the waste non-infectious.

Additionally, students learned about the importance of regulatory compliance and quality assurance measures in biomedical waste management, including documentation, record-keeping, and monitoring of treatment efficacy. They also had the opportunity to interact with plant staff and gain insights into the challenges and best practices in biomedical waste management.

The outcome of the event: The visit to the biomedical waste treatment plant proved to be highly informative and insightful for the participating students. It provided them with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in managing biomedical waste and the critical role played by treatment facilities in ensuring public health and environmental protection. The firsthand exposure to the operational processes and technologies used in waste treatment enhanced students' knowledge and appreciation of the subject matter. Furthermore, the visit stimulated discussions among students on the importance of adopting sustainable waste management practices and the need for greater awareness and advocacy in this regard. It also inspired students to explore potential research opportunities and career paths in the fields of environmental science, waste management, and public health.

In conclusion, the visit to the biomedical waste treatment plant was a valuable educational experience that complemented classroom learning and provided students with practical insights into real-world environmental challenges and solutions. It underscored the department's commitment to experiential learning and capacity building in environmental science and allied disciplines.

 

On February 21, 2024, a group of 30 students from the Department of Zoology, IIS (deemed to be University) in Jaipur had the exciting opportunity to visit the State Forensic Science Laboratory. They were accompanied by Dr. Lata Shahani, Head of the Zoology Department and Prof. Priyanka Mathur. Their main goal was to get a practical understanding of how different branches of forensic science work and their role in solving crimes and ensuring justice. The visit was divided into three main areas: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Physical Sciences, with each area giving them valuable insights into various aspects of forensic investigations.

The Forensic Science Department's biology section highlighted the critical role of DNA analysis in various criminal investigations, including rape, murder, newborn exchange, and human trafficking cases. The students were introduced to the basics of DNA structure and its role as the genetic blueprint of living organisms. They were educated on techniques like polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing, essential for extracting, amplifying, and analyzing DNA samples. Additionally, the department illustrated the process of comparing DNA profiles to pinpoint suspects and establish connections to crime scenes. The students were also explained in detail about the investigations carried out by the FSL team.

In the chemistry section, students learned about techniques like chromatography and spectroscopy, which are used to identify and analyze substances found at crime scenes. The department demonstrated how chemical analysis can provide important evidence in cases involving arson, drug-related crimes, and toxic substances. Specific attention was given to analyzing excise substances (like alcohol and tobacco), explosives, and narcotics. Students were shown how sophisticated equipment and chemical tests are employed to identify and analyze these substances. They also learned about narcotics classification, detecting explosive residues, and examining alcohol levels in cases such as drink-driving incidents.

Then toxicology section focused on the detection and analysis of drugs and toxins in biological samples. Students were introduced to the processes involved in toxicology testing, including sample preparation, extraction, and instrumental analysis. They learned about the effects of drugs on the human body, drug metabolism, and the importance of toxicology in determining cause of death and detecting drug-related crimes.

The ballistics section provided insights into the analysis of firearms and their ammunition. Students learned about the examination of bullets, cartridge cases, and gunshot residues. The experts explained the principles of ballistics and how the examination of firearm-related evidence can help determine the type of weapon used and establish links between suspects and crime scenes.

The computer forensics section focused on the examination and analysis of digital evidence. Students learned about the tools and techniques used to recover and analyze data from computers, mobile devices, and other digital media. They also learned the importance of data integrity, digital evidence preservation, and the role of computer forensics in solving cybercrimes and retrieving valuable information for criminal investigations.

The field trip to the Forensic Science Department offered students a comprehensive understanding of forensic science's branches and their role in crime-solving. It provided valuable insights into biological, chemical, and physical sciences' contributions to investigations. The department's infrastructure was impressive, with well-equipped labs for various analyses like DNA testing and ballistics examination, highlighting their commitment to technological advancement. Safety measures were rigorously followed, ensuring lab safety. Administrative facilities were well-maintained, supporting smooth operations. The visit facilitated networking with professionals, fostering potential collaborations and inspiring research ideas. Overall, it was an enriching experience, enhancing students' understanding and potential for future research in forensic science.

 

The Department of Zoology of IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur organized an interactive session and hands on training on the “Male Reproductive Techniques” on 01-03-2024.

Alumna Dr. Karuna Agrawal, alumna of the IIS (deemed to be University), Jaipur was heartily welcomed by Dr. Lata Shahani, Head Department of Zoology and Prof. Priyanka Mathur. Her work to study the reproductive toxicity caused by antidepressant drug Escitalopram in male swiss albino mice and its amelioration by pumpkin seeds extract, is highly commendable. She has published a number of papers in National Journals.

She addressed the students of B.Sc. Honours, Postgraduate and Ph.D., enlightening them by sharing her knowledge on the practical aspects of research by explaining and demonstrating the techniques. She also emphasized the significance of teamwork and lab to lab collaboration. Her positive and encouraging approach inspired  the budding scholars to also follow in her footsteps.

She performed a systematic dissection of the male albino mice to examine various organs while primarily focussing on the reproductive system, which includes organs such as the testes, epididymis, and seminal vesicles. These organs are crucial for sperm production, storage, and ejaculation.

Through this demonstration, participants learned about the anatomy and function of the male reproductive system in mice. They gained insights into how these organs interact and contribute to fertility. Understanding the reproductive system in mice is important for various research purposes, including studies related to fertility, reproductive disorders, and toxicology. Overall, this practical demonstration has provided valuable hands-on experience and insight into the reproductive biology of male albino mice.

 

To celebrate National Science Day, a health awareness session on ‘Prevention of Fatty Liver Disease’ was organized by Department of Zoology, IIS (deemed to be University) under SMilES project which aims to target Indian College students between the age range of 18-25 years for self-assessment of risk factors of Non-communicable diseases (NCPs) and fatty liver.
The session was organized in A.V. Hall in two batches For Science students - 10.00 am to 11.00 am For Arts and Commerce - 11.15 am to 12.15 pm The session was taken by Iswarya S , Project Officer in SMilES Initiative in Department of Clinical Research and Epidemiology in Institute Of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi. She had experience in working in National Health Missions, State Health Systems Resource Centre- SHSRC, Trivandrum, Kerala and non –governmental organizations like
Humjoli Foundation and Foundation Of People-Centric Health Systems (FPHS).
Ms. Ishwarya started the session by stating the cause of occurrence of fatty liver which is
common in younger generations with the current life style . She elaborated on the various stages of fatty liver that finally culminates into cirrhosis and liver cancer, hence there is a need to take healthy diet, exercise and good life style as some of the preventive ways, she added. A google form was filled by the students which had questions related to height , weight and other parameters which are indicators of fatty liver. The session was quite informative that invoked self awareness amongst the students with regard to their health and good eating habits.Atte

Department of Zoology organized an intradepartmental laboratory visit on 17th August, 2023, for the PhD scholars and M.Sc. students for make students aware about the instruments present in the University. In this visit students learnt the working and applications of all the sophisticated instruments present in the various departments of Sciences like Department of Zoology, Botany, Environmental sciences, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Physics, Home Science. Students were very enthusiastic  in the working of PCR Machine and its uses in molecular techniques,   CO2 incubator for cell culture, Spectrophotometer, Cold centrifuge machine, Gel doc system in research lab; Fibre plus for fibre estimation in food items, Kel Plus for protein estimation in home science Department. Rain water and Gauge system and PM 1 particulate sampler, Air sampler were very useful instruments of Environmental Science Department to detect air quality. Students were very happy by observing direct application of these instruments in daily life. In physics Department   thermal vacuum Evaporation system was very useful and amazing. In conclusion it was very fruitful visit for the students. Students came to know about the use of various apparatus which they can use in their research purposes.

 

In the wildlife week, the Department of Zoology organized an educational trip on 7th October 2023, for students to Nahargarh Biological Park, Kukas and enriched their knowledge about faunal as well as floral diversity. The visit to the park was an enlightening effort to make the students learn in the lap of Mother Nature. The students of BSc and MSc were able to visualize different fauna and their behavioural interactions. The park is an abode for tiger, lions, leopards, wolves, fox, jackals, hyenas, black bear, spotted deer, black buck, sambhar deer, Indian gazelle, hog deer, emu, alligators, crocodiles, porcupines, wild boar, langurs and a cascade of butterflies which included plain tiger, lemon pansy, common rose, lime, blue pansy, peacock pansy, common jejebel, white orange tip, pioneer, oriental glass jewel, common yellow, indian palm bob and rounded pierrot. The park also contained numerous species of birds which included rufoustreepie, peacock, kingfisher, tailor bird, babbler, bee eaters, indian roller, parakeet, pigeon, laughing dove, red wattled lapwing, drongo, robin, bulbul, and humming bird etc. The students were also enlightened by the NGO-RAKSHA about the importance of venomous and non-venomous snakes.  The trip was an effort to make students aware about wildlife rehabilitation and its protection. Students understood the importance of forest conservation and the role of community in preserving them.

 

 

A guest lecture was organized by Department of Zoology on 22nd February, 2023. Lecture was delivered by eminent ethnologist Prof. Reena Mathur for the UG and PG students. As it is a part of their syllabus, students were keen interested in this lecture. Prof. Reena Mathur told about the work of renowned scientists in the field of animal behavior. She told that study of animal behavior is known as ethology. Ethology has concepts of it, which are universally true and applied to all organisms. She explained the subject in such an interested way which students enjoyed a lot and they learned the concepts during the lecture itself. Overall it was a learning with fun classroom. And students benefitted with it.

VISITORS- Prof. Priyanka Mathur, Dr. Anju Sharma, Students pursuing Ph.D., Masters and B Sc Honors in Zoology

 

An Educational visit to the 'Entrepreneurship and Career Hub - Incubation Center' at Rajasthan University was organized by the Department of Zoology, IIS (deemed to be University) on 27 July 2023. A total of 23 students pursuing Masters, Honors, and Ph.D. courses were privileged to gain knowledge from such exposure. The students were escorted by Prof. Priyanka Mathur and Dr. Anju Sharma.

Professor P.J. John, Co-ordinator of ECH-Incubation Centre, guided the students about start-ups and the process of building an idea into a successful career. He briefed them about the overarching vision and objectives of the incubation center, how it helps innovative ideas grow into profitable business models, and the kind of mentorship and guidance it provides to student entrepreneurs. The funding schemes provided by the government and facilitated by the university, such as UNITE and SPICE, were explained to students, as well as light was shed on the important topic of ‘Women Entrepreneurship’.

Faculty members of the center familiarized students with various labs, such as the Bio lab, plant tissue culture lab, setup lab, microbiology lab, and core lab. Highly advanced machinery with great accuracy, such as a spectrophotometer used to measure the intensity of light (number of photons), and a Vacuum rotary evaporator used to remove solvents from samples like plant extracts, was demonstrated.

In addition to that, equipment like High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Thermal Cycler,RT-PCR,COD digester, Gas chromatography, Vacuum mixer homogenizer, and Plant growth chamber were also introduced. The lab was equipped with advanced tools for cellular-level studies, including a digital cell counter, flow cytometer, and light microscope with 4k resolution.

The center was also equipped with a well-furnished office area to fulfill the basic workspace needs of the entrepreneurs. A unique feature was the scale-up lab, where researchers/inventors can work on accomplishing pilot projects.

Students were encouraged to pursue careers as entrepreneurs by highlighting various successful startups initiated by students at the university level, such as recycling of E-waste and reselling the chemicals to the industry, and the development of an antibacterial clothing line using block printing, etc.

 

This visit provided the students with immense knowledge about various high-tech research machines, their applications, methods of sample analysis, and result prediction, etc. The department also assured students of the opportunity to conduct their research work in these labs in the future. In conclusion, this successful educational exposure visit achieved its objective of providing new and beneficial learning experiences.
