Objective: 

Course objectives:

This course will enable the students to –

  1. Enlighten the students about the importance of biological macromolecules, structures and configurational properties.
  2. Examine the key role of biochemistry in the metabolic process.

Biochemistry

The students will –

CO17: Analyse the concepts of biocatalysts, enzyme activity and its kinetics.

CO18: Acquire detailed knowledge about the structure, classification, physico-chemical properties and biological significance of carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins and lipids.

CO19: Illustrate the anabolic and catabolic pathways of different cellular biomolecules, rate-limiting steps and energetic pathways.

CO20: Correlate the defective enzymes and inborn errors of metabolism.

CO21: Assess the role of biomolecules in the metabolic processes.

  • Amino acid degradation: Deamination reaction- Oxidative and non oxidative deamination reaction, Transamination and Trans deamination, Decarboxylation, Ornithine cycle of urea formation, Fate of carbon skeleton of amino acids(Metabolism of individual amino acid excluded)
  • Inborn errors of metabolism: Alkaptonuria, Phenylketonuria, Maple Syrup, Tyrosinemia, Albinism, Urea Disorders.
