The title tiNai refers to an Indian ecophilosophy which integrates the nature, the culture and the sacred, similar to the Greek concept, oikos, meaning “household” or “family.” This is the basis of ecology. tiNai, a South Indian concept, categorizes the landscapes into five, all of which are named after native flowers. These divisions of landscapes—montane (known as kurinji), pastoral (mullai), riverine (marutam), littoral (neytal) and desertic (palai)—are dependent on the natural and cultural aspects of the land and people. The convention was the basis of poetry and the social order of the people, even centuries ago. This year this festival was held at Dr. K.N. Modi University on 18-19 March 2016. The festival was held in Northern India (Rajasthan) for the first time. The students of BSc, BSc (H) and MSc visited the festival. The films screened in the festival:

Dr. Punit Saraswat is a Associate Professor, Head of Zoology and Environmental Sciences in Lachuram Memorial College of Science and Technology, Jodhpur delivered a talk on fisheries. He had an interactive session with undergraduate and post graduate students of the department on 12th March 2016, and promoted the research and applied skill based among the young minds. His elaborate interaction was immensely helpful and insightful, for the graduate and post graduate students.

Prof. Sangeeta Chouhan, Head of Anatomy Department, SMS Medical College Hospital, Jaipur delivered a lecture on the histology and functions of kidney and liver on 27 February 2016 to the post graduate and undergraduate students of Zoology. Prof. Chauhan has 36 years of teaching experience and no. of books on histology to her credit. Her concepts about the human anatomy proved to be a great help for the students.

On 2nd Feb. 2015, our department visited Kewalramani Hatcheries in Ajmer, Rajasthan.  Kewalramani hatcheries deals with the business of producing and selling day old layer and broiler chicks and also fresh table eggs since the past thirty years. They have the capacity to supply 3 million table eggs a month.

Students were shown movable incubators where the fertilised eggs are kept and the incubators where the eggs hatch.  Incubator has the capacity of holding 30,000 eggs, which are continuously turning at an angle and eggs are kept straight in such a way that their broad end is towards lower side and narrow end at the upper side.

Overall it was a great experience to see this kind of setup in India. We thanked Kewalramani sir for the visit.

On 19 January 2016, the students of the IIS University (B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc.) visited the Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur and enriched their knowledge about avifaunal diversity. They were mesmerized to observe so many birds at the same place. The zeal to learn motivated them to identify the faunal diversity. Nearly 90 species of birds and 10 species of other fauna were identified by them. The visit to the park was an enlightening effort to make them learn in the lap of Mother Nature. They not only identified the different fauna of the park, but they were able to visualize different ecological and behavioural interactions. The examples of parental care, family, nest-building, kinship behavior etc which they read in books were evident in front of the young minds. The whole experience for them was very refreshing and unforgettable. The trip was an effort to promote awareness about wildlife and its effective management. Young minds were rejuvenated with the importance of wetlands, migratory birds, forest conservation, community interactions etc. that will surely ensure in betterment of wildlife and their protection in future.
