Objective: 

Course objectives:

This course will enable the students to -

  1. Study of invertebrate laboratory specimens based on their external features and appearance
  2. To gain knowledge about various molecular biology techniques including gel electrophoresis and chromatography and their applications in the research field.
  3. Study of wild and mutant strains of Drosophila.
  4. Performance of qualitative and quantitative biochemical techniques to differentiate between different biomolecules based on their physical and chemical properties.
  5. Analysis of different modes of central tendency, standard deviation and variance.

The students will be able to

CO 41: Identify and describe different laboratory specimens based on their external features and appearance and their categorical relation with various phylum.

CO 42: Get hands-on experience of various molecular biology techniques including gel electrophoresis and chromatography and would learn about their applications in the research field.

CO 43: Enhance their knowledge about wild and mutant strains of Drosophila and their important structures.

CO 44: Learn various qualitative and quantitative biochemical techniques to differentiate between different biomolecules based on their physical and chemical properties.

CO 45: Perform calculations of different modes of central tendency, standard deviation and will be able to calculate variance.

Molecular Biology:

    DNA isolation and separation by Agarose gel method
    Vertical and horizontal electrophoresis unit (demonstration only)
    Paper chromatographic separation of amino acids

    Study of Drosophila life cycle & idea about its culture
    Identification of Male & Female Drosophila
    Identification of Wild & mutant (Yellow body, Ebony, Vestigial wings, White eye, Apterus) of  Drosophila
    Study of permanent prepared slide - Sex comb, Salivary gland chromosomes
    Identification of Blood groups (A,B, O & Rh factor)
    Preparation of frequency tables and graphs manually and with help of computers.
    Calculation of Mean, Median, Mode.
    Calculation of standard deviation, variance and standard error of the mean.
    Chi square test for independence of attributes, t test
