Monosaccharides disaccharides and oligosaccharides.
Stability and formation of glycosidic bond. Configuration and conformation. Storage and structural polysaccharides and Glycosaminoglycans (heparin, hyaluronic acid) glycoproteins and glycolipids.

CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM
Glycolysis and fermentation, Pasteur, Crabtree and Warburg effects. Reaction of TCA cycle, energy yields and central importance of the cycle. The Cori cycle. Glycogen metabolism and its regulation, Defects in carbohydrate metabolism-Glycogen storage diseases, galactosemia, lactose intolerance.

Biosynthesis of cholesterol and its regulation. Disorders of lipid metabolism (Ketosis, Niemann Pick disease, Gaucher's
disease, fatty liver, obesity and atherosclerosis).

AMINO ACID, PROTEINS AND METABOLISM
Classification and properties of the amino acids and proteins,Fibrous proteins-keratins, collagen. Globular proteins-myoglobin, hemoglobin. Peptides and the peptide bond,
stability and formation of the peptide bond. Ramachandran plot, levels of protein organization. Protein sequencing.
General reactions in amino acid metabolism. Urea cycle and its regulation. Genetic disorders of amino acid metabolism.

LIVER AND KIDNEY FUNCTION TESTS
Liver function tests- excretory functions, serum enzymes, metabolic capability and synthetic functions.
Renal function test-glomerular function tests, tubular function tests, serum analysis
Free radicals- types, source and generation of free radicals Anti-oxidants in biological system.
