M.Sc. students of Zoology of IIS (Deemed to be) University, Jaipur went for a “Workshop on Foldscope Microscope” on 29th October, 2018, organized by “Vivekanand Global  University”. In this workshop students learnt assemblage of the parts of microscope, and the working of foldscope microscope in day to day life. Foldscope is an ultra-affordable, paper microscope, designed to be extremely portable, durable, and to give optical quality similar to conventional research microscopes (magnification of 140X and 2 micron resolution).  Foldscope brings hands-on microscopy to new places. It is low-cost scientific tool that globally expand access to science and break down the price barrier between people & the curiosity and excitement of scientific exploration.

The Department of Zoology, IIS (deemed to be) University, Jaipur, organized a guest lecture entitled “Mechanism of action of pharma drugs” on 5th December 2018. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Ganesh N. Sharma from School of Pharmaceutical Science, JNU, Jaipur. He enlightened students about the mode of action of any drug in animal model. Beside this he gave information about many different tests which can be performed to evaluate the effect of toxicant or drug in animal.

The Department of Zoology, The IIS (Deemed to be) University, Jaipur, organized a guest lecture on “Philosophy and Physiology of pineal gland and melatonin” on 29th January 2019. The Guest speaker was Prof. Chandana Haldar, Professor and Former Director, Institute of Science and Head Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. In her talk, she emphasized on Pineal gland physiology, Philosophy and importance of melatonin in human health. She also explained the relationship of melatonin with reproduction and immunity and also emphasized on photo-periodic transducer/Neuroendocrine Transducer/Hormone of darkness. Her lecture was very informative and it was a very good learning experience for students and faculty as well.

A workshop was organized by the Department of zoology, IIS (Deemed to be University) Jaipur  in which Dr. Rajbala Verma Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Rajasthan shed her expertise to post graduate students. She gave a lecture on Genotoxicity and Chromosomal Abberation Assay. Chromosomal aberrations are abnormalities in the structure or number of chromosomes and are often responsible for genetic disorders. Chromosomal abnormalities can result from either a variation in the chromosome number or from structural changes. These events may occur spontaneously or can be induced by environmental agents such as chemicals, radiation, and ultraviolet light. Visible changes to chromosome structure and morphology have played a very important part as indicators of genetic damage in both clinical and cancer studies. Postgraduate students have research dissertation in their curriculum in which they have to choose some research problem. So they learnt this techniques by which they can assess genotoxicity of any chemical or compound. Dr.  Rajbala Verma explain the technique in detail followed by practical demonstration.  This workshop proved very helpful for students.

On 20 January 2018, the students of the IIS University (B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc.) visited the Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur and enriched their knowledge about avifaunal diversity. The zeal to learn motivated them to identify the faunal diversity. Nearly more than 100 species of birds and 10 species of other fauna were identified by them. The visit to the park was an enlightening effort to make them learn in the lap of Mother Nature. They not only identified the different fauna of the park, but they were able to visualize different ecological and behavioural interactions. The whole experience for them was very refreshing and unforgettable. The trip was an effort to promote awareness about wildlife and its effective management. Young minds were rejuvenated with the importance of wetlands, migratory birds, forest conservation, community interactions etc. that will surely ensure in betterment of wildlife and their protection in future.

Post graduate students of Department of Zoology participated in Anweshan West Zone Student Convention 2018 in Ganpat University, Mehsana. Anveshan 2018 aims at identifying and nurturing research talent of the young and budding researchers in the country. Launched by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the convention attracts young scholars and researchers from various universities. Envisaged as a zonal and national level competition, Anveshan 2018 acts as a platform for emerging researchers to express their ideas that can lead to innovative research initiatives. It also presents the research and innovation happening in the universities. The students presented there dissertation work in poster presentations and 50 universities from western India participated in it.
