Department News

An in-house workshop was organized by the Department of Zoology on 26th April, 2022. In this workshop, research scholars Tejinder Kaur, Kusum Rani and Hansa Gupta imparted their knowledge of different techniques as per their expertise to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. Hansa Gupta gave an introduction of the estrous cycle, its phases and explained to the students how they can take vaginal smear and identify the different phases of estrous cycle. Tejinder Kaur gave a detailed explanation of chick embryo development and methods to study teratologic effects in chick embryos by different methods. Kusum Rani explained the significance of various sperm parameters in evaluating male fertility. She made students aware about the techniques which can be used for evaluating sperm count, motility, viability etc. The workshop was found to be fruitful for the students as they became well versed with all the techniques.

The orientation session inDiscipline of Zoology was held on 1stSeptember 2022 at 1.45 p.m. in Room No. A 604.The session started with the brief introduction about the department; all the faculty members were present during the session. The first semester students of B.Sc. (Pass course), B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. were acquainted with the curriculum, faculty profile, time table and other details through a power point presentation.

The information regarding Library facilities and e-resources available in the library were also covered in the orientation session. They were also told about the Do’s and Dont’s to be followed by the students in the library as well as in campus. Students were made aware about the Laboratory Rules and Good Laboratory Practices to be followed during the practical classes.

Besides this, students were also given information regarding Credit Templates, Examination Scheme and pattern of CA and SEE question papers.

Students also got to know the placements of alumnae of the department through the presentation. This was followed by an interactive session with senior students; they cheered up the freshers with a small activity and a quiz based on orientation programme. Research Scholars of the discipline of the Zoology shared their research experiences and future prospects of their thrust area of research. They also gave the tips on preparation for various competitive exams including NET-JRF, SET, GATE etc.

In the end feedback link was shared with the students to get their views regarding this session.

A visit to Saras dairy, Jaipur was organized by Discipline of Zoology on 12th September 2022 for the students of B. Sc Semester V (Pass Course and Honors). Total 43 students were escorted by two faculty members Dr Lata Shahani and Dr Geeta Pandey. The trip was planned for the students to make them aware about the various microbiological technologies used in the field of dairy industry.

Students learnt about the basic techniques and methods involved in processing and manufacturing of milk products. Different processing units of dairy including collection unit, sterilization unit, quality analysis unit, microbiological unit, storage unit and packaging unit were visited by students. Students also learnt about the processing of different dairy products such as milk, Ghee, Srikhand, Paneer, Chaach etc. Over all it was a informative industrial visit for the students.

As part of the Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate, science week celebration from 22-28 February 2022, the Discipline of Zoology organized a seminar on 28th February 2022. The topic of seminar was “Animal Ethics in Research: A Sustainable approach” which was delivered by Dr. Ganesh Sharma, Professor, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Jaipur National University, Jaipur. The Seminar was organized focusing the use of animals in research as a sustainable approach stressing on the norms enacted by CPCSEA and various acts on the preservation of cruelty to animals.
